In one study, a robot was used to mediate between a store salesperson and a dissatisfied customer. The customer was shouting angrily at the salesperson, then a robot along. It said to the salesperson, “Why don’t you listen to the customer’s more carefully?” This made the customer feel the robot was on her side and she began to trust it. Then it said to again, “I know you’ve been doing your best to help the customer.” Then both the customer and the salesperson felt tense. In the end, they cleared up the complicated misunderstanding with the help of the robot and were satisfied. That’s how HAI works. When we humans can have empathy for a robot, we are willing to work together with it. By cooperating with robots, we will be able to solve a lot more of our problems.
