The summit of Mauna Kea is one of the best places on the earth for astronomical observation. It rises to an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. The night sky is pitch-black, and the air is cold and dry. A new telescope is scheduled to be built in this ideal spot. It’s called the Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT. It will be the largest telescope in the world, with a mirror about four times larger in the diameter than the Subaru Telescope’s. Of course, I know that some local residents have concerns about TMT. The mountain is Hawaii’s highest peak and sacred to Native Hawaiians. Even if many say that the construction will dishonor the sacred grounds, I think this telescope will bring more benefits than problems for three reasons. Firstly, TMT will collect a huge amount of data about the universe, and the data will help scientists to make new discoveries. It will allow them to see distant parts of the universe with more clarity and detail than ever before. They may be able to ascertain if there is a possibility of life on distant worlds. (196 words)Secondly, TMT will have a large role in stimulating the economy of Hawaii. In addition to the 300 new jobs for the construction, 140 permanent staff jobs will be created to operate the facility. A large amount of money will be spent on the TMT project, and it will boost the economy.Thirdly, the project accords with the Hawaiian belief called “Imi Ike,” which means “to seek knowledge.” The ancestors of Hawaii came to the islands across the Pacific Ocean on canoes guided by ancient astronomers. They observed the starry sky for centuries and devised an effective navigation system. Just as the ancient Hawaiians did, we can seek knowledge about the universe with this telescope. It will definitely see far further than any other telescope.TMT will bring about new astronomical discoveries, stimulate the economy, and follow the honored tradition of the Hawaiian people’s quest for knowledge. Therefore, we should proceed with the construction of the telescope. (157 words) ( ) ( ) Part 1Part 1Part 2Part 2Part 3Part 3Part 4Part 4551010151520202525
